General information

Short Summary
The company’s recycling unit is a revolutionary industrial waste management process powered by solar energy. It uses a solar concentrator with a patented giant Fresnel lens to transform waste into valuable materials recovery. This innovation addresses the global need for efficient and sustainable waste management. The SME is looking for an industrial partner to develop and manufacture the industrial pilot (TRL8) of their solar concentrator and is targeting an open call from the EIT Raw Materials
Full Description
The company has one mission : reducing the carbon footprint of energy-intensive industries using concentrated solar energy solutions. Every day the sun provides 10,000 times the energy needed for melting, heating, burning, drying and all the other high energy consuming industrial processes. It is the first company to explore direct solar concentration for industrial purposes. Their solutions use only sunlight and mirrors. There is no need for complex and polluting processes like the ones used for building solar panels. Their technology can potentially reduce 30 to 40% of all industry's impact because of its efficiency and can reduce the carbon footprint of heavy industry up to 40%.

With this project, the primary goal is to scale-up their current prototype to an industrial level (from 2mx2mx3m machine to 15mx15mx14m). This project will include: the design and the manufacturing of our solar recycling machine. The application of the machine is to transform waste into an inert material, suitable for the construction industry as well as for the glass industry, thus contributing to sustainable waste management and recycling. The point is to get from a TRL7 to a TRL 8-9.

They are looking for an industrial partner to collaborate. The collaborative project, which focuses on advancing a solar concentrator technology to market readiness, has a budget of €2 million. This budget underlines their commitment to achieving significant technological milestones and ensuring a rapid transition to commercialization.

To finance this project, the company is targeting European funding more precisely EIT Raw Materials for Upscaling Projects (KAVA 12). The company has been selected in Phase 1 of the call (January 2024) and is now submitting in Phase 2.This call offers funding to collaborative projects composed of partners from the industry and research and education. Upscaling KAVA projects are innovation projects based on validated technologies that need additional step(s) for testing, demonstration, proof of concept and up-scaling prior to commercialization. The purpose of these projects is to support good technologies, products, and services that are currently under development to reach market entry.
Advantages and Innovations
Their technology is the first decarbonized recycling solution for conventionally non-recyclable waste (pollution). Their solar concentrator can reach temperatures of 4000°C with no combustion and it allows them to easily vitrify any pollution and render it inert and usable in the construction industry as well as in the glass industry.

IPR description
For a pilot project, the SME is seeking an industrial partner in the European Union or Horizon Europe associated countries with at least one of the following expertise:

• Heavy Mechanics: Expertise in the design and fabrication of mechanisms to operate the machine, similar to technology used in earth station antenna, construction cranes or amusement park rides.

• Heat Exchangers: Proficiency in transferring radiant energy to a heat transfer fluid or heat storage material.
• Electronics/Electrical Engineering: Skills in control systems and low-voltage DC electric motorization.
• Plastics Engineering: Capability in manufacturing lenses through molding or machining transparent PMMA sheets with optical properties.
• Smoke/Fume Capture and Filtration: Experience in developing and integrating efficient systems for capturing and filtering smoke and fumes from combustion, employing advanced filtration technologies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and maintain air quality standards.

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
The industrial partner will play a pivotal role in the project by:

1. Technical Collaboration and Innovation:

• Conceptualization and Design: Participate in the initial brainstorming and conceptual design phases to integrate practical and innovative solutions that leverage the partner's expertise in heavy mechanics, heat exchangers, electronics/electrical engineering, or plastics engineering.

• Prototype Development: Lead the development and testing of prototypes, ensuring that the technical specifications meet the project’s objectives and the industry standards. This involves hands-on engagement in the creation and iterative refinement of prototypes.

• Technical Validation: Conduct rigorous testing and validation processes to ensure that the technology is safe, efficient, and ready for deployment. This includes compliance with industry regulations and performance benchmarks.

2. Strategic Market Introduction (optional):

• Market Analysis and Strategy Formulation: Collaborate in conducting detailed market analysis to identify target markets, potential customers, and competitive landscapes. Assist in formulating a robust market entry strategy that includes pricing, distribution, and promotional tactics.

• Product Launch and Scaling: Work closely with the marketing and sales teams to launch the product effectively. This includes participating in trade shows, demonstrations, and other marketing activities. Provide support in scaling operations to meet market demand efficiently.

3. Governance and Project Execution (optional):

• Advisory Role: Serve on advisory boards or steering committees to provide strategic guidance and oversight throughout the project lifecycle. This involves periodic review of the project’s progress against its goals and making necessary adjustments to strategies.

• Resource Management: Facilitate the allocation and optimization of resources—ranging from technical tools to human capital—to ensure that the project milestones are met on time and within budget.

• Risk Management: Proactively identify potential risks associated with the project and collaborate in devising mitigation strategies. This includes technical, market, and operational risks.
