General information

Short Summary
A German research institute is an expert in manufacturing and materials science. They offer to contribute their expertise to SMEs within research projects, e.g. relating to cutting processes, additive manufacturing of plastics and metals, adapting materials, developing new alloys, optimisation with AI. The aim is to render processes more efficient. State of the art research facilities are available. Suitable programmes are to be identified.
Full Description
A German application-orientated research institute offers the skills to serve a wide range of sectors in need of research services in the field of manufacturing and materials science. Founded in 1952 with a focus on the tools sector the institute widened its expertise to become an acknowledged expert in the field of manufacturing and material science. The institute seeks research and development opportunities with industry partners that would like to combine their resources in performing RTD projects. The institute provides access to research and development services including multidisciplinary teams and experts and cutting-edge equipment.

The institute focusses on innovative solutions for modern-day design and manufacturing challenges. The institute enables 3D modelling, topology optimization, several material manufacturing processes along the production process, multi-material 3D printing, reverse engineering, and additional Industry 4.0 solutions. To do so reliability analysis and service life prediction regarding the mechanical, thermal, as well as the corrosion, wear, and aging behaviour is in focus. The institute is provided with equipment to test the composition, microstructure, mechanical and physical as well as degradation properties of a wide range of materials.

In five departments the institute conducts research and development and supports partners in the fields of product design and development, fabrication and prototyping, product testing as well as technology verification and material optimisation and development.

In the Tools department the focus is on knives, saws and cutlery such as hand-held knives, but also industrially used machine knives as well as the cutting and machining processes of those. The department aims on the optimisation of the material regarding service life, cutting ability and cutting stability, and corrosion behaviour as well as implementing new tooling material to increase the sustainability. The goal is to support its partner by increasing the cut quality thus increasing the sustainability of the cutting process.

In the department for Transformation and Innovation the focus is on additive manufacturing of plastics and metals (FDM, Bubblejet, and DLP, additive manufacturing of metals using the LPBF process) . The goal is the industrial series application and increased quality of desired components. The department also enables the holistic view of work structures in SMEs and how they can benefit from a competence architecture for digital and agile working.

In the Materials department the focus is on the adaption of advanced materials and devices as alternatives to established solutions by development of new alloys and identification of their application potentials. To do so the department offers various processing methods of new alloys and non-metallic materials (melting, rolling, drawing, injection moulding integration, vaporizing for further additive manufacturing processes) from the raw materials to the semi-finished product followed by identifying the most suitable joining process for the intended application.

In the department for AI technologies AI is used to maximise efficiency and reduce costs of the production process. The focus is on the predictive maintenance, process optimisation, and quality control, through analysis of data from industrial processes. The aim is to enable SMEs in particular to utilise state-of-the-art AI technologies through the use of low-budget hardware and open source software.

Areas of application include aerospace, automotive, clean tech, construction, consumer products, engineering, (mechanical/chemical/metallurgical) infrastructure, machinery & equipment, manufacturing, material science, product development, robotics, sports, and transportation.

The research institute would like to cooperate with enterprises that would like to leverage their resources and access research and development services.
