General information
- Short Summary
- A Greek SME has developed an online portal using cloud computing as a traceability tool in order to track the whole length of the supply chain, from cotton to clothing. It is interested in establishing commercial agreements with technical assistance.
- Full Description
-
This Greek textile agency specialises in representing clothing manufacturers to potential buyers. The product range it offers covers women’s, men’s and kids’ fashion in jersey, woven, woven mix and knitwear. It works with major foreign clothing brands that have a combined annual production base and exports amounting to 2 million clothes.
It has developed a joint venture with a reputable German company to create the first global blockchain for sustainable and traceable cotton.
Cotton is one of the most widely-used natural fibres in the textile industry, accounting for about 25% of the global fibre market. However, cotton production and consumption also face various social and environmental challenges, such as water scarcity, pesticide use, labour rights violations, and greenhouse gas emissions. Cotton traceability is the ability to track the origin and journey of cotton through the supply chain, and it is becoming increasingly important for both the textile industry and consumers.
Cotton traceability can help improve the sustainability, quality, and authenticity of cotton products, as well as enhance the transparency and accountability of the value chain actors. However, cotton traceability also faces some obstacles, such as the lack of standardized methods, technologies, and regulations across different regions and sectors.
With advanced blockchain solutions, the technology on offer is able to record each step of the production process, from raw materials to final product, on an immutable and decentralized digital register. This enables brands and consumers to have complete visibility into the origin, authenticity, and quality of a textile, providing information about the source of the raw materials, the manufacturing process, and the distribution channels involved.
Traceability is particularly important in the textile industry due to the complex nature of the supply chain. Textiles often go through multiple stages of production, involving different suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. Without traceability, it becomes challenging to ensure ethical practices, prevent counterfeiting, and address issues related to quality control.
Moreover, traceability is crucial for brands that wish to showcase their commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing. By providing transparency and traceability, brands can build trust with consumers, who are becoming more demanding that products align with their ecological values.
This blockchain technology created by the Greek client allows different users to upload live data using a process that is visible to other participating parties. In addition, the end user-consumer is able to see, through an online portal, the entire path a garment has followed.
The company's vision is to showcase Greece’s potential, reliability and sustainability in clothing production and to strengthen Greek craftsmanship and production. Thus, it is looking for collaboration with partners across Europe through commercial agreements with technical assistance. - Advantages and Innovations
-
This blockchain technology is a decentralized ledger system that records and verifies transactions across multiple computers or nodes. It provides a secure and transparent way to store and share information, without the need for intermediaries. Moreover, it enhances traceability by encrypting and linking every transaction and interaction along the supply chain.
The blockchain consists of blocks of data that are linked together in a chain-like structure. Each block contains a set of transactions or information, along with a unique identifier called a hash. The hash is created by applying a cryptographic algorithm to the data within the block.
Once a block is added to the blockchain, it becomes virtually impossible to alter or tamper with the data within it. This is because changing the data in one block would require changing the data in all subsequent blocks, which is computationally expensive and easily detectable, thus safeguarding against counterfeiting and fraud.
Blockchain technology offers a wide range of benefits for the textile industry, particularly in terms of traceability and transparency.
Blockchain enables the recording and tracking of every transaction and interaction along the textile supply chain. This means that brands and consumers can have complete visibility into the origin, authenticity, and quality of a textile product. By scanning a QR code or using a unique identifier, consumers can access information about the materials used, the manufacturing process, and the ethical practices employed.
Blockchain technology allows for real-time tracking of inventory, making it easier for brands to manage their stock levels and optimize their supply chain. By having accurate and up-to-date information about the location and quantity of textiles, brands can reduce waste, minimize stockouts, and improve overall efficiency.
Blockchain can streamline logistics by automating processes such as customs clearance, shipping documentation, and payment settlements. - Stage of Development
