Full Description
The Greek SME is a certified organic pomegranate products company established in Volos Greece in 2012. The company’s integrated all-inclusive production complex consists of the pomegranate orchard, equipped with integrated by-products recycling unit, as well as the main industrial processing plant. In this context, an array of innovative processes is applied from end to end, throughout the spectrum from orchard to table.

First things first a unique farming method utilizing the beneficial properties of homemade specific microorganisms has been developed and put to practice, applying circular agroeconomy principles in harmony with natural life cycles, so as to secure absolute freedom from use of artificial compounds in the company’s farming practices. Besides, the high degree of integration and spatial containment of the premises (orchard, recycling unit, industrial plant, warehouse and coldrooms all in one location) alongside with their independence from the need for outsourcing of raw materials or other aids results to high sustainability standards at all stages of production, while keeping the overall carbon footprint at bay.

The production starts with and is based upon the juice extraction from the selected pomegranate fruits. The organic juice, which besides standing in its own right as a free-from, fresh frozen juice produced through cold extraction, is also the basic ingredient for the rest of the derivative products, including a number of pomegranate jellies, sweet and sour pomegranate sauce and pomegranate caviar. In fact the juice comes without any additives whatsoever, comprising the quintessence of the pomegranate arils, which are scrutinously removed from the fruits through a multistage process before extraction. Compressing the arils with their high contents of polyphenols and rich variety of other antioxidants, yields a destinctive sweet-sour taste followed by an interesting palette of gentle aftertastes and an uplifting feeling of freshness.

Due to the company’s unique farming protocol, there are quantity limitations regarding their annual production capacity, considering that they rely solely on their own resousces in order to deliver their products at the expected quality standards, a fact that no outsourcing can guarrantee. Under this light the estimated maximum annual capacity for the pomegranate juice to reach the market is – climatic conditions allowing – up to 100,000 units. There is a more flexible production program concerning the rest of the products, based on the stored frozen pomegranate juice as their sole main ingredient. The rest of the products – the pasteurized pomegranate juice included – are being produced upon demand throughout the year so as to be delivered to the client as fresh as they can be keeping their nominal shelf life intact at the client’s disposal.

The products are marketed as follows:
1. frozen juice in 500ml PET bottles,
2. pasteurized juice in 250ml glass bottles,
3. a variety of pomegranate jellies in 210gr glass jars,
4. pomegranate sweet & sour sauce in 240ml glass bottles,
5. pomegranate caviar in 106gr glass jars.

The SME is considering expanding their product range to include new functional products such as Organic pomegranate fruit extracts in liquid and/or powder form. These extracts, in raw form, can be the foundation for various health, welfare and beauty products. Accommodations regarding the final extract form (liquid or powder) can be made after discussions with interested parties.

At present the products are available at several retail and e-shops in Greece. At this stage the company is at a readiness level to access European F&B markets of relative standards. To do so, they are addressing European importers, wholesellers and specialty food chains to undertake - under contract - the introduction and promotion of their products into such markets, so as to give them a chance to become part of the diet of conscientious consumers along Europe.
Advantages and Innovations
- Integration

The production procedures cover the entire spectrum from orchard to table. The company cultivates its own trees and do not rely on outsourcing for the fruits that form the basis for the production of the juice and the rest of the organic products range.
The fact that the industrial plant is an integral part of the estate, guarantees that control over product quality is kept at a maximum at all stages of production.

- Circular farming economy

Being self-contained in practicing both farming and industrial activities in one unit, gives the edge to follow a circular pattern in the production steps, in the sense that the outputs – or at least a sizeable part of them – of one activity are the other’s inputs, and vice versa so as to keep the activity rolling with minimum external additions.

- Cultivating innovation

In the context of extensive recycling their own farming and industrial byproducts alongside a multitude of locally available raw materials, they have developed an exclusive protocol for employing homemade beneficial microorganisms in order to produce fermented organic soil amendment, which in fact constitutes the sole input to the orchard soil. This medium rich in nutrients and loaded with bioenergy as it is, ensures soil health, which in turn is manifested in the vitality of the trees and the fruits they deliver.

- Environmental awareness

Choosing to perform the farming and industrial operations integrally, according to circular farming economy principles, accounts for minimal carbon footprint due to the elimination of unnecessary transportation and waste disposal. Instead, extensive recycling made possible thanks to the innovative farming practices, with absolute exclusion of artificial farming aids, guarantees system sustainability, self-sufficiency and overall environmental performance.
