General information
- Short Summary
- A Greek SME which produces protection systems that are intended to detect birds and bats, and deter them away from wind farms, is interested in concluding commercial agreements with agents or representatives who can promote their products on foreign markets.
- Full Description
-
This Greek start-up is active in developing deep technology solutions for green industry. It is particularly specialized in creating protection systems for animals using artificial intelligence. Its trademarked products are designed to prevent birds and bats from colliding with and being harmed by wind turbines or other industrial installations.
The company’s systems have 3 distinct phases.
Detection: high-definition cameras are installed at a height of around 10 meters above the ground which scan the sky around the wind farm to detect birds. The images captured by the cameras are processed using algorithms that are trained to distinguish between birds and other moving objects, such as planes. Every wind turbine generator is equipped with 4 stainless-steel boxes mounted using powerful magnets. Each box houses daytime cameras to record high-resolution color images of the covered area, and thermal cameras that capture heat signatures emitted by birds and other flying objects. When a bird is detected, the system monitors its course to determine whether it poses a threat to the wind turbine.
Deterrence: if a bird enters the deterrence zone, which is a predefined area around the turbine where birds are at risk of colliding with the blades, the system emits a non-harmful and non-invasive acoustic warning through directional reflective horns to make the bird change its course. This sound is designed to be unpleasant to birds and to encourage them to fly away from the danger area.
Wind turbine pause feature: if a bird continues to fly towards the wind turbine despite the sound, the system will shut down the turbine until the bird leaves the danger area. This is done to prevent the bird from colliding with the blades, which can be fatal for the bird and can also cause damage to the turbine. Once the bird has left the danger area, the turbine is automatically restarted, and the system resumes its monitoring.
A similar deterrence system has been designed for bats, utilizing advanced thermal cameras to monitor and protect bat populations. It accurately detects the presence of bats specifically during the time period when they are actively hunting and in flight.

-
The products are based on machine-learning and video-content analysis algorithms so as to continuously improve their bird and bat detection capabilities and to ensure that false positives are reduced to a minimum. Thus, they enable wind turbines to operate at the optimum level and minimize the negative impact on energy production. These algorithms also use classifiers and large databases of bird images to efficiently identify a large variety of bird species, by size, flying patterns, etc. Via a cloud-based platform, the algorithm can be easily adjusted to different birds and according to the original equipment manufacturer’s specifications. Therefore, the system is optimized for the specific wind turbine installation and the bird species present in the area.
The systems have additional features with advanced thermal cameras that allow for 24-hour monitoring, as well as being able to operate in the most challenging weather conditions such as fog, snow, and rain.
The company has also adapted its bird deterrent product specifically for offshore wind farms. This includes a high protection rating against dust and water, and specialized spraying nozzles in order to keep the cameras clean from salt residue.
The company’s bird protect system has a distinct competitive edge since it is constantly being trained and improved by gathering and integrating data from over 240 existing installations.
The system can also record images and video sequences of bird activity in the covered area, which can be used for further analysis and to provide evidence of bird activity to stakeholders such as environmental regulators.
The bat deterrent detects bats in real-time. It takes into account various factors such as wind speed and environmental conditions. By using a specially-designed algorithm, the system is able to regulate the start-up speed of the wind turbine generator in such a way that it minimizes the risk to specific bat species, while maximizing energy production. - Stage of Development
