General information
- Short Summary
- This Greek winery with a long history of wine-making has developed unique brands that it wishes to offer to international partners for import and distribution.
- Full Description
-
This Greek company’s estate includes two wineries, where it cultivates Greek and International grape varieties from which it produces Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wines, as well as vegan wines. It is one of the most dynamic Greek wine companies, cultivating more than 50 hectares of privately-owned mountain vineyards located at the highest altitude of any vineyards in Greece.
The vineyards of the area are generally very old, with very low yields per acre yet high productive potential. The company’s main crop is Savatiano, which is perfectly adapted to the arid climate, while in the past 10-15 years, the company has also been experimenting with other varieties.
The company offers a number of classic and rare earth wines, specially produced for export. Its cool elegant dry white wine is made from two local grape varieties (savvatiano and moschofilero). After careful picking and sorting of the grapes, vinification of each variety takes place separately. After a light pressing of the grapes, the must is extracted, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a low temperature. Then the new wine remains in contact with the lees (deposits of residual yeast) for a few weeks to further enhance the distinctive aroma and taste.
The rosé wine is made from agiorgitiko grapes grown in vineyards located at an altitude of 800 metres. The vinification is performed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at 15° C for about 15 days.
The red wine is also composed of the same single grape variety, but grown on the plateau. The grape pulp remains in the tanks at a temperature of 12° C for a few days, while the vinification temperature is 23° C. Separation is performed when enough phenolic ingredients have been extracted to create a wine with a vivid colour and a strong aromatic character.
The company is looking for commercial partnerships with importer-distributors to take its wines beyond its borders to global markets. - Advantages and Innovations
-
At the start of this century, the company made a pioneering choice for the design installation of its new vineyards. It reduced the planting density and shaped the stem wall, following the internationally-recognised lyre system whereby a horizontally-divided trellis system is used for upright growing varieties in medium to high yield vineyards. The lyre (or U-shaped) system consists of a short trunk branching into bilateral cordons that diverge laterally, and then bend along parallel cordon wires. Training the canopy in this fashion is used as a defense against mildew by exposing grapes to more wind and sun.
The company’s scientific team consistently applies innovative techniques of analytical chemistry and sensory analysis to continually improve its existing wines and develop new ones.
The company offers visits to and guided tours of its winery, which can be combined with many other activities in the wider area, which is rich in history, gastronomy and natural attractions, the region offers something for every visitor.
The company has also added a unique dimension to its website, with a journey into the world of wine and art, with classic paintings and artefacts, depicting the fascinating story of wine throughout the ages. - Stage of Development
