General information

Short Summary
A greek SME offers an innovative solution for early detection, monitoring and decision support for enhancing the resilience of private or public infrastructure against wildfires. It is actually a groundbreaking risk mitigation system for minimizing the time between incident detection and critical action. The company is looking to conclude collaboration with partners on abroad of any size under the context of commercial agreements with technical assistance or research cooperation agreements.
Full Description
Today, the time between wildfire detection and critical action to initiate suppression is still too long to keep pace with the rapid spread of catastrophic effects. Therefore, ultra-early detection and decision support systems (DSS) are critical to protect lives, property, infrastructure and assets. In other words, the time between the ignition of a wildfire, its detection and eventual suppression is a critical factor in determining the potential to contain and control it.

A Greek SME with many years of scientific and technical experience in the field of natural disaster risk management has developed an integrated suite of solutions to play a catalytic role in reducing the damage caused by wildland fires worldwide. The ground-breaking combination of methods, techniques and software aims to fill critical gaps in preparedness, thereby minimizing the losses, negative impacts and costs associated with wildfires.

Specifically, the suite consists of five levels of support, namely: (a) an intelligent, artificial intelligence (AI)-based pipeline to analytically map the local threat anywhere in the world, able to propose efficient placement (or patrolling) of detection sensors (ground sensors, cameras, sensors on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles-UAVs) to maintain maximum protection while keeping installation costs low (~45% reduction of installation costs); (b) a DSS with early detection functionality based on satellite data; (c) an advanced DSS with ultra-early detection functionality based on ground sensors; (d) a premium DSS with an ultra-early detection functionality based on ground sensors and a patrolling/ confirmation mechanism based on UAVs; and (e) tailored services and advice to minimize catastrophic impacts.

It is important to emphasize that while these levels of support are interrelated, they are in fact fully customizable and can be offered as standalone solutions. For example, we have seen the great value that our Hazard and Placement solution (level (a) above) can bring to other early warning system integrators, so we need to emphasize the great impact that this base product can have on wildfire protection, disaster mitigation, but also cost reduction. Through cutting-edge techniques, we identify and quantify wildfire hazard areas with utmost precision. This knowledge empowers us to strategically distribute sensors, resulting in a substantial reduction of installation costs —approximately 45%— while ensuring comprehensive protection against wildfire hazards.

The Greek SME is in need of finding partners of any size within the fire-tech community willing to establish collaboration under commercial agreement with technical assistance as well as research and development cooperation agreement.
Advantages and Innovations
As a whole, the suite of solutions can provide an integrated ultra-early warning system and DSS for the proper management of wildfire risk. However, the tiers can also be offered separately, providing added value and degrees of freedom to different end users. This adaptability ensures that the solutions are tailored to local requirements, setting them apart from one-size-fits-all alternatives.

The methodology is based on rigorous scientific principles and has been tested and validated in real-world scenarios, demonstrating its effectiveness and reliability. This commitment to scientific rigor distinguishes the suite from alternatives that lack such robust validation.

The solutions offer a seamless integration of features, including interactive GIS maps, real-time data, historical information, simulations and early warning all in one multi-level package. This comprehensive approach distinguishes the suite from fragmented, less-integrated options.

The core innovation lies within the breakthrough approach of analytically mapping the local wildfire hazard, which is used as the basis for an intelligent sensor placement. This approach gives a robust and systematic answer on “how to appropriately place sensors on the field” in order for the area to be fully protected, but also for the installation to be affordable, especially for large areas. This new AI-based approach analyzes any area in terms of local wildfire potential and suggests the optimum location for every sensor (or even patrols for sensors placed on UAVs). In this sense, some “high-risk” areas need to be protected by a dense network of sensors, where others not so “prone” can be fully protected by a coarser network.

This approach is scientifically sound yet offers an invaluable tool for cost rationalization; ~45% reduction of costs. This places the solution at a clear advantage compared to traditional installation approaches, which are based on empirical field operations and subjective expert opinions.

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
The Greek company is looking for partners to establish collaboration under different types of partnerships.

More specifically, the Greek SME is actively seeking for partners within the fire-tech community, and especially early warning system integrators, to collaborate on piloting and testing certain aspects of the suite of solutions; such as the intelligent distribution of sensors. They are looking also partners such as forest area managers in order to collaborate in piloting the integrated suite of solutions. The desired type of collaboration is a commercial agreement with technical assistance.

Finally, the Greek company is interested to conclude research and development cooperation agreements supported by EU grants with foreign entities and organisations with the aim to further develop relevant aspects of interest.
