General information

Short Summary
Spanish University is preparing a proposal for the upcoming call HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-HERITAGE-03. The project aims to revolutionize archaeological analysis through the development of an AI tool for the automated recognition of production and use-wear traces on ceramic artifacts. Leveraging machine learning and large datasets, it aims to revolutionize traceological analysis, enabling large-scale studies of past economies and social patterns. Open-source and globally aplicable.
Full Description
Traceology, the study of these microscopic traces, provides crucial insights into past technologies, economies, and social behaviors, but is traditionally a time-consuming and specialized process.
Project TRAICES addresses this challenge by applying cutting-edge techniques in computer vision and machine learning to massive datasets of ceramic imagery. The core methodology involves utilizing image segmentation and object recognition algorithms, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to identify and classify traces on ceramic surfaces. The project will leverage existing archaeological data from Prehistory to II World War archaeological sites to refine the AI model. Further testing and refinement will occur with new data from several on-going archaeological projects.
TRAICES promises to significantly advance archaeological research by:
• Revealing economic patterns: Tracing changes in ceramic production, trade, and consumption over time.
• Understanding social organization: Identifying patterns in ceramic use that reflect social hierarchies, gender roles, and ritual practices.
• Mapping cultural exchange: Tracing the diffusion of technologies and ideas through the analysis of finds styles and traces.
• Enhancing heritage management: Providing a tool for authenticating artifacts and assessing their condition for conservation.
• Facilitating citizen science: Creating opportunities for public participation in archaeological research through crowdsourced data collection and analysis
The project team comprises experts in archaeology, computer science, and artificial intelligence from the University and the rest partners ensuring a strong interdisciplinary approach. The resulting tool will not only accelerate archaeological research but also democratize access to advanced analytical techniques, fostering a more collaborative and data-driven future for the field. Ultimately, TRAICES aims to unlock new insights into the lives and societies of past peoples on a global scale.
Advantages and Innovations
TRAICES pioneers AI-driven traceology, automating analysis traditionally reliant on expert skill. Its innovation lies in applying advanced computer vision (CNNs, SAM) to massive archaeological datasets – a scale previously impossible. Open-sourcing the tool democratizes access, while the focus on both production and use-wear traces offers a holistic understanding of artifact lifecycles. The project uniquely combines archaeological expertise with cutting-edge AI, promising transformative insights into past societies and economies. It also explores citizen science integration for wider data collection
