General information
- Short Summary
- A research team from Poland has developed an innovative chemical formulation for hydrophobic finishing of natural textiles such as cotton. The treatment ensures water repellency without compromising softness or breathability and maintains performance after multiple washing cycles. The team seeks industrial collaboration for technical cooperation, licensing, or pilot testing.
- Full Description
-
A research team active in textile surface chemistry has developed a proprietary formulation designed to impart durable water-repellent (DWR) properties to natural textiles, particularly cotton.
This hydrophobic finishing solution is tailored for use in industrial textile processing environments and addresses a significant market need for breathable, sustainable, yet water-repellent alternatives to synthetic fibers. The core technology is based on organosilicon compounds that chemically bond with cellulose-based fabrics. Once applied using standard finishing methods such as padding or exhaustion, the treatment forms a thin, invisible layer on the textile surface. Unlike conventional coatings, it does not affect textile appearance, hand-feel, or air permeability.
Multiple formulation variants have been optimized to address diverse needs such as low-temperature curing, solvent-free processing, or increased compatibility with various textile structures. Performance tests confirmed the hydrophobic effect is maintained after repeated wash cycles under standard laundering conditions. The existing technology is based on a platform of modified silicone compounds, with the ability to adjust parameters and achieve additional functionalities, e.g., bacteriostatic properties and flame retardancy.
The research team is open to cooperation with textile manufacturers, technical textile finishers, and apparel producers interested in sustainable finishing solutions. Possible cooperation models include technical cooperation, licensing agreements, and joint scale-up or pilot testing initiatives. - Advantages and Innovations
-
- One of the few available technologies offering durable water repellency for natural fibers (e.g., cotton).
- Maintains textile softness, color, and breathability – unlike many synthetic coatings.
- Demonstrated wash resistance over multiple cycles.
- Compatible with conventional industrial textile finishing lines.
- Flexible chemical design allows customization (e.g., solvent-free, low-curing).
- Environmentally conscious alternative supporting sustainable textile innovation.
