POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION:
Axis 1 : critical game design & civic / democratic engagement.
The call emphasizes the need for innovative methodologies to foster civic engagement and democratic
participation, particularly among young people. IMRG's expertise in critical game design directly aligns
with this: we can offer to analyze and develop gamified pedagogical tools that effectively convey
complex concepts of democracy, citizenship, and European values. Critical game design involves a
deeper examination of how games function as cultural artifacts, systems of meaning, and potential tools for social commentary or change. Our critical approach can ensure these tools are not only engaging but also promote critical thinking about civic issues, avoiding simplistic or propagandistic approaches.
In this axis, we can do:
• Analysis of existing games (mainstream) for their potential (positive or negative) impact on civic
attitudes.
• Development of game design guidelines for creating impactful citizenship education tools.
• Design and prototyping of innovative game-based learning experiences that simulate democratic
processes or explore civic dilemmas.
• Evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness of gamified interventions in fostering civic
engagement.
Axis 2 : Video game literacy & understanding of social / cultural diversity
The call highlights the importance of understanding social and cultural diversities and how national
identities contribute to the European identity. IMRG's focus on video game literacy is crucial here: video games are powerful cultural artifacts that can shape perceptions of identity, culture, and society.
In this axis, we can do:
• Analyzing how video games represent (or misrepresent) different cultures, identities, and
historical narratives.
• Developing educational resources that teach young people to critically analyze video game
content and its social/political implications.
• Creating games that promote intercultural dialogue, empathy, and understanding of diverse
perspectives.
• Researching the impact of video games on the development of civic competencies, such as
communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
Axis 3 : Research creation & innovative pedagogical approaches
The call seeks competence-based, transformational, and action-oriented pedagogical approaches. It also explicitly encourages the use of digital gamified pedagogical tools. IMRG's commitment to research creation is perfectly suited to this: by combining research with the actual creation of educational tools and interventions, we can ensure that our work is both theoretically sound and practically relevant.
In this axis, we can do:
• Developing and testing innovative pedagogical models that integrate game design, critical
thinking, and civic education.
• Creating prototypes that allow young people to actively engage with democratic concepts.
• Producing toolboxes and guidelines for educators on how to use games and interactive media to
foster civic engagement.
• Disseminating research findings and best practices through publications, workshops, and online
resources.
