The institute deals with research and development for technological innovation in the marine value chains. The main R&D areas are:
- biotechnologies applied to the production of new marine biobased products
- valorization of marine by-products and sidestreams for the production of functional foods and bioactive compounds using innovative technologies

Moreover, the centre offers innovative services for organisations and SMEs such as:
- ecotoxicology test in vitro
- extraction of bioactive molecules from marine biomasses and evaluation of protective effects in vitro
- quality assessment, monitoring, and attestation in support of nutritional labels and certifications
- training in the food technology sector applied to aquatic products

The institute is actively promoting circular economy pathways through several initiatives and involvement in international projects (Engage4BIO, ...)
