General information

Short Summary
An Italian neurologic rehabilitation hospital, with the largest national spinal cord injury unit, integrates clinical and social aspects of disability, focusing on patients’ autonomy. The Institute is seeking to collaborate in partnerships to co-design and/or test in its clinical environment innovative healthcare technologies (e.g. medical devices, drugs and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products - ATMPs) under research and development cooperation agreement (including EU projects).
Full Description
A highly specialized hospital in northern Italy, private but fully publicly owned, is a national excellence in the intensive rehabilitation of patients affected by acquired neurologic lesions (mainly severe spinal cord and/or brain injuries), of both traumatic and non-traumatic origin.

The Institute is a 158-bed facility with 400+ professionals employed, taking care of patients at the early stages after the neurologic lesion event (e.g. immediately after the stabilization of their critical conditions by trauma centres), until the chronic stage of neurologic pathologies. The Institute's spinal cord injury unit is the largest in Italy, more than half of the admitted patients are extra-regional. The Institute also has outpatient clinics, dedicated to the follow-up of previously admitted patients or to fully external patients.

The main Institute's facilities are:
- dedicated care units (rehabilitation critical care with 18 beds, intensive care included; spinal cord injury with 88 beds; severe brain injury; day hospital; specialistic hospitalizations for the treatment of complications, also in chronic patients)
- high-level image diagnostics (advanced 3-Tesla MNR, 64-layer TC) and therapeutic devices (e.g. surgical and bio-stimulation laser)
- rehabilitation swimming pool and several gyms, including robotic rehabilitation
- a “life bridge” apartment for patients and their caregivers pre-domiciliation
- a wide hilly green park area, for inpatient rehabilitation and social activities, also with their visitors.

A multi-disciplinary approach is the key feature to rehabilitation of the Institute, for the integration of clinical and social aspects of disability, centered on people’s quality of life. Aware that patients are going through more than just recovery from an injury, the Institute accompanies them in learning a new way aimed at "re-appropriation" of the best achievable autonomy in their new condition. In this perspective, an apartment for pre-domiciliation (life bridge) is available inside the Institute to allow patients to evaluate the autonomy achieved in everyday self-care and domestic life and to facilitate family reunification. This apartment is available also for their caregivers, to prepare the detachment from the hospitalized environment.

The Institute is committed to research and care innovation and is willing to extend its research partnerships joining creators, developers and producers of innovative healthcare technologies (e.g. new medical devices, drugs and ATMPs). The Institute can act as a clinical consultant and/or a clinical trial centre in pre- or post-market stages, provided an external suitable funding source is available.

Desired partnerships would be under research and development cooperation agreement or joint EU projects submission.
Advantages and Innovations
The Institute’s Scientific Technical Committee, a Board of Research, an Infrastructure for Research and Innovation and a Scientific Secretariat support research activities. Together with in-house developed protocols and studies, the Institute is a partner in Italian and European projects involving other public and private institutions, hospitals, academy and industry.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
Partners searched are active in innovative healthcare technologies (e.g. medical devices, drugs and ATMPs) - not only strictly for rehabilitation purposes - and need consultancy, expertise and facilities to design, develop and test their innovations through clinical trials and/or preclinical research (patient engagement).

Technologies sought can be at a low TRL (preferably TRL 4 – technology validated in lab) and need to reach TRL 7 (system prototype demonstration in operational environment) or TRL 8 (system complete and qualified). They can also be at TRL 9 for post-market clinical trials.

Other topics of interest are:
- telerehabilitation
- healthcare technologies with relevant impact on social innovation and for caregiving.

Partner Sought

Expected Role of a Partner
Ideal partners have developed or are willing to develop innovative technologies (e.g. medical devices, drugs and ATMPs), not only strictly for rehabilitation purposes, and need clinical consultancy, expertise and facilities for testing and clinical trials (in pre-market or post-market stages).

They lead and finance technology R&D activities (or have access to other sources of funding).

Partners could also cooperate in possible joint submissions to European Calls.
