As dementia is a disease which has no underlying cure, early detection and prompt treatment are important for effective management of dementia. The current dementia screening method has some limitations to examine for mild cognitive impairment, pre-stage of dementia.
To overcome the limitations, a Korean SME has developed remote dementia screening solution that analyzes speech with artificial intelligence. The solution can early detect dementia before degeneration of cognitive skill by extracting features of dementia patients through hesitation, vibration and speech interval.
The solution requires 11 speech tasks to user for screening dementia. It then provides results displayed 3 types; normal, cognitive impairment, dementia, within a minute through automatic scoring system based on AI.
While existing screening tool focuses on analyzing speech content of dementia patients, the Korean company’s solution focuses on ‘speech method’. Based on this, the Korean company developed a language-independent algorithm, so foreign language version of solution can be quickly developed without redesigning algorithm.
The remote dementia screening solution is being offered in Korean senior daycare and public local senior welfare centers. Furthermore, the solution is patented in South Korea, Taiwan and USA. Since 2022, the Korean company has developed Chinese version of the solution in Taiwan in cooperation with Show Chwan Memorial hospital. They carried out the first clinical trials by collecting Chinese speech data and it is expected to be completed the Chinese version in 2025.
The Korean SME is looking for global partners under research & development cooperation or investment agreement. With potential partners, the Korean company will perform clinical trials for collecting speech data for local seniors and localize the 11 speech tasks of solution. The final goal is to optimize the current algorithm using the local speech dataset and develop English/Spanish of solution for commercialization. - Advantages and Innovations

* Senior-friendly Design : With only one button per task and large fonts for readability, it minimizes errors in use.
* Accessibility and Convenience : The screening process takes only 10-15 minutes and users can examine dementia with a mobile device anytime and anywhere.
