A Korean startup proficient in healthcare chatbot solution and artificial intelligence natural language processing has been developing a digital mental health solution that monitors human emotions and reduces depression by empathic conversation with AI.
As generally known, the empathic conversation is an essential treatment technique for patients and clients in psychiatry and professional counselling centres, and has various clinical effects such as trust formation, emotional support provision, self-awareness promotion, emotional regulation, and stress reduction. It is effective in improving the overall mental health of patients and maximizing the effectiveness of treatment.
Using this empathic conversation method, the Korean startup’s solution operates in a conversational manner through voice recognition using AI characters familiar to the user, and asks about emotions, moods, and daily routines. According to many psychiatry researches, depression symptoms are alleviated simply by listening to the stories of patients with depression and providing empathy and psychological support. This solution accurately classifies and responds to users’ emotions in empathic conversations with them, and is effective in reducing users’ stress and depressions symptoms are conversations through comforting, empathizing, and positive conversation based on users’ emotions.
Through clinical research with this solution, the classification accuracy of user emotions (appropriate response is possible only when user emotions are accurately classified) is over 80%, and the user stress reduction rate after emotional conversation was found to be 28% lower than the PHQ-9(Patient Health Questionnaire-9) depression diagnostic test.
Korean startup has developed a digital consultation device as a kiosk-type and been successfully provided to public health centres, city halls, schools, and youth centres. It is expected that this solution can lower the entry barrier at a lower cost for those who have difficulty in receiving psychological counselling. In addition, it can help detecting mental health issues early and provide help or refer people to counselling experts.
