Short Summary
An Italian researcher has developed a visual and/or haptic aid via a new steering wheel, a new steering system to help drivers in following a path/avoiding obstacles even in case of fog or unclear visual. An Italian patent is already there and an International one is going on. The researcher is looking for licence agreements with a company producing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in order to develop and produce the system. Videogame and aircrafts companies are seeked as well.
Full Description
The invention aims at achieving a collaboration between automatic action and human action in a new type of steering wheel and a new steering system that can assist the driver in driving a vehicle. The system uses a new type of steering wheel and, in the steering box and depending on the type of vehicle (mechanical or electronic/electric connection between steering wheel and steering box, acting on the rack of the axle of the wheels), an epicyclic toothed wheel or an actuator commanded by a computer that serves both to take account of the inputs (aid and driver) and to ensure that the final steering is harmonious. Both the steering wheel side and the steering box side, consist of two parts: one commanded by the driver, the other commanded by the obstacle sensors (infrared, ultrasonic, or radar or equivalents) or any other task that it is wished to perform. In particular, at the steering wheel side, the component of the input commanded by the sensors acts as visual/haptic feedback (depending on the modality chosen) and it is opposite with respect to the feedback provided by the steering systems currently available in the market and this is crucial to make a secure driving according to the instictive reaction of the human being.
The studied technology can also be applied in the development of video games.
The Italian researcher is mainly interested in getting in touch with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) company for patent licensing. Videogame and aircrafts companies are seeked as well being the described technology useful for controlling both real and simulated vehicles.
Advantages and Innovations
1) cooperation between the driver and the automatic aid
The technology currently available on the market usually provides a kind of help that completely excludes the human element: the automation decides which way is better to turn the steering wheel and the driver has literally to follow it. In the developed and patented system, human and automation are supposed to work together as a team: both have their important role and this would improve the security of the driving, de facto the two inputs are summed up (or scaled and summed up).

The new steering wheel is made in order to give to the driver a visual/haptic (according to the modality selected) aid designed, after long studies about human reflex response, in way that the response of the team (aid+driver) is the most secure one.
