- The Maltese company has developed a CEMS to continuously monitor, analyze, and report gas emissions from ships whether in ports or open seas on data buoys. Given that the system is in its final testing stages, the company is seeking maritime authorities and enforcers, pollution measurement companies, data buoy specialists, and shipping operators that are interested in having the system deployed in their territories or in the measured data.

The IMO 2020 regulation limits the Sulphur in the fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) which is a significant reduction from the previous limit of 3.5%. In May 2025, the Mediterranean Sea will become a Sulphur Emissions Control Area (MED SOx-ECA) with Sulphur reduced to 0.1%.
To be able to meet this regulation, the CEMS solution that has been developed consists of stationary gas analysers that are deployed in smart buoys and ground stations around the harbour, and which connect with automatic identification tracking systems (AIS) tracking systems to monitor the ships providing in-situ measurements of SOx and CO2 emissions.
When the CEMS detects high emissions from a ship it alerts the central system to conduct more in-depth inspections.
An adapted solution can be installed on board vessels to give ship owners insight of their emissions and compliance with international laws. - Advantages and Innovations

The currently existing maritime sulphur emission monitoring systems are found on shore whereas the uniqueness of this solution is in that it can be deployed out at sea where ships use the highest speeds and thus emission is the highest.
The information that is detected is highly accurate and the CEMS data is available in real time to enforcers over secure data-sharing systems. so that they are able to perform further investigations of fuel compliance among targeted ships in their territorial waters. Furthermore, pollution monitoring results can also be easily reported to the IMO and other authorities as per obligation. - Stage of Development
