General information

Short Summary
A new method to produce nitrogenous arenes, developed by scientists at a German university, involves the first synthesis of HAT-CN in the solid phase using a ball mill or extruder. This method generates less hazardous substances and is performed at room temperature within an hour with higher yields. These two factors result in environmentally friendly, safe, profit-maximizing synthesis. The university offers a license agreement as well as a technology cooperation agreement.
Full Description
OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology is used for screens in smartphones, tablet computers as well as in larger-screen TVs and computer monitors. Nitrogenous arenes are used in OLED and solar cell applications and precursors for carbon materials. In such materials, they are used in adsorption, catalysis, energy storage (such as hydrogen storage), and electrochemical dual-layer capacitors, batteries, and fuel cells. The new method, developed by scientists at a German university, involves the first synthesis of HAT-CN in the solid phase using a ball mill or extruder. A significant advantage over conventional synthesis is the complete elimination of organic solvents, meaning that manufacture generates less hazardous substances. It is also performed at room temperature within an hour with higher yields. These two factors result in environmentally friendly, safe, profit-maximizing synthesis.

HAT-CN exhibits promising properties in OLED architectures, where it can be used as a protective layer, as doping material in hole injection layers, and even as an independent intermediate layer. It is also used in organic solar cells, for targeted graphene growth, and for synthesis of porous carbon materials with high N content. Till now HAT-CN synthesis has entailed a great deal of time and costs. The new method can produce large quantities in less than a day. It also requires no hazardous chemicals such as acetonitrile and acetic acid, so synthesis is safer and more environmentally friendly.

The university offers offer interested companies, OLED manufacturers or fine chemical distributors, a license agreement. A technology cooperation agreement is also possible to further develop the technology.
