Short Summary
The invention refers to a process for obtaining functionalized magnetic systems, such as magnetite/thioacids/Ag or Au, used for the diagnosis and targeted treatment of cancer. The process according to the invention consists in the precipitation of magnetite nanoparticles in a solution of thioacids in NaOH medium, glucose and silver nitrate are added to the magnetite suspension, resulting in a triple layered core-shell structure.
Full Description
The present patent application presents, for the first time, complex Fe3O4/thioacid/nanoAg or Au systems as well as the technology to obtain them. These systems are effective for the diagnosis and loco-regional, targeted treatment of cancer through the hyperthermia produced by the magnetic component exposed to an external electromagnetic field, through the action of Au or Ag nanoparticles as well as through phototherapy induced by the excitation of Au or Ag nanoparticles.
The proposed multifunctional systems use unconventional methods to treat cancer by using both magnetite and Au/Ag nanoparticles (and ions) that induce apoptosis through various mechanisms.
These multifunctional systems contain magnetic particles (especially magnetite) with an anti-tumor role induced by hyperthermia, an organic component (thioacids) with the role of a binding agent - linker and Ag or Au nanoparticles with an anti-tumor and antiseptic role induced by the presence these nanoparticles or the excitation of these nanoparticles by phototherapy. Combining magnetite nanoparticles with those of Ag or Au is particularly useful because it allows both the treatment of cancer through various mechanisms but also ensures a septic environment thus preventing the development of infections at the level of the treated organ or tissue. These systems can be directed in the magnetic field to the area of interest and thus targeting can be ensured - better efficiency in the tumor area, this aspect is especially important if the delivery of cytostatics is aimed at.
Advantages and Innovations
Layered core-shell structures based on Fe3O4/thioacid/Ag or Au or composites can be exploited in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, taking into account the properties of the components but especially the synergism between them. Thus, the magnetic core allows directing in the magnetic field and the generation of hyperthermia, the Ag nanoparticles induce intrinsic antimicrobial and antitumor activity or can generate photothermia while the drug load can provide the antitumor activity necessary for cancer treatment. The synergism between the components allows the release of the active substance to be carried out on external command, as a result of irradiation with appropriate fields, obviously in a targeted way, provided by magnetic fields or by the additional decoration of these structures with appropriate receptors. Additionally, the presented nanostructures can act as phase contrast agents in imaging/diagnosis.
