General information

Short Summary
A German startup aims to unlock the potential of agroforestry systems for climate protection and CO2 storage. Contacts are sought to European partners along the entire value chain of poplar timber, e.g. in wood construction, biochar or other application areas that enable long term binding of CO2.
Full Description
A startup from Hamburg, northern Germany, focuses on climate protection and CO2 compensation through agroforestry. The SME plants and harvests fast-growing poplar trees alongside agricultural land in form of alley cropping systems.

The trees absorb a high amount of CO2, which after harvesting shall remain bound in long term applications to qualify for carbon offset. The business model involves financing of agroforestry projects through carbon compensation measures like donations, climate credits and agroforest as a service within value chains.

The company has already realised 3 pilot projects in Germany. The trees are harvested sustainably after a comparably short period of 8 years and, as roots remain in the ground, regenerate quickly, providing long-term benefits to farmers and climate. The raw materials from harvested trees can be used for diverse bioeconomy applications.

To further scale up activities, the company would like to extend its network to European partners along the entire value chain of poplar timber, always under the condition to ensure long term binding of CO2 within applications. The intention is to use the entire poplar wood harvest, from wooden panels to wood fibers.

Potential partners are companies or research and innovation entities specialised in or open to explore the use of poplar wood in construction, furniture industries, circular materials, biochar or any other long term binding applications. Also contacts to sawmills that are open for small scale project cooperation would be valuable.
