General information
- Short Summary
- An Italian company is looking for partners to co-develop prototypes using its solid-state, safe and shapeable supercapacitors for high performance. Supercapacitors are energy storage systems complementary to batteries which, thanks to their high power density, are used in automotive, aerospace and naval sectors. Partnerships sought under commercial agreement with technical assistance or research and development cooperation agreement.
- Full Description
-
Founded in 2020 as a University startup in the heart of the Motor Valley (Emilia-Romagna region), the company is an innovative Italian startup active in the production of supercapacitors for the automotive, marine, and aerospace sectors. The startup has been selected among the best in Europe for its acceleration path and received several awards for leading the way in the use of advanced technology in the energy storage industry. The company also develops high-performance materials for energy storage.
The company produces high-performance solid-state, shapeable supercapacitors, to be combined with batteries, to increase the performance and efficiency of vehicles and devices.
A supercapacitor is an energy storage device that contains more power than a battery, thereby charging and discharging more rapidly. Batteries are great for a slow and constant energy release but less efficient for immediate energy peaks. Unlike traditional batteries, supercapacitors can release their full power in a few seconds, offering performances similar to an athlete running a 100m sprint, while batteries release energy gradually and slowly - like a marathon runner. Moreover, the absence of liquid electrolytes avoids the risk of leaks, explosions and evaporations that often make supercapacitors dangerous.
The innovative supercapacitor is based on proprietary materials; its solid state and shapeability bring several advantages in many application sectors in terms of efficiency, performance, space, weight, temperature and safety such as: adaptability, reduced volume, improved energy density and no leakage, degradation, fires - compared to the current market offer.
>> More details on advantages in the dedicated section of this profile.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
The innovative supercapacitors are particularly suitable for all those sectors requiring high bursts of power, especially those industries undergoing electrification, such as:
- Automotive (Electric & hybrid vehicles, ICE - Internal Combustion Engine, FCEV - Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles)
The sector needs solutions for reduced weight and volumes. The use of supercapacitors brings improved safety thanks to the absence of liquid electrolytes; ease of integration into vehicles thanks to its moldability; reduced charging times thanks to the high power density; and increased efficiency and responsiveness of the overall system while promoting sustainability by allowing battery downsizing and extended battery life.
- Aerospace
Supercapacitors ensure reliable power supply to electronic emergency systems and by integrating supercapacitors in the carbon structure of devices, they reduce occupation of space and weight as well as loading very quickly.
- Marine - Naval
Benefits in terms of efficiency and performance, thanks to the high power density.
Integrating supercapacitors helps increase the boat's safety. They can supply bursts of power to stabilisers or Dynamic Positioning Systems (DPS) to reduce the rolling motion and maintain the position. And they represent a reliable power supply to electronic emergency systems and crew safety systems in adverse weather conditions, while providing power boosts to the engine.
TARGET PARTNERS
The company’s supercapacitors are targeted towards industry markets especially original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) where the demand for high performance justifies a high cost of components, and where high power is needed in limited spaces: automotive, aerospace and naval sectors.
The Italian company is looking for industrial production partners in Germany, France, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Ideal partners are OEMs in the automotive, aerospace and naval sectors that can place supercapacitors in the structure of vehicles through a joint prototype with the Italian startup. Moreover, the company is open to partnering with battery producers.
Partnerships sought are commercial agreement with technical assistance and research and development. - Advantages and Innovations
-
Supercapacitors are particularly suitable for applications requiring high bursts of power, mainly in the automotive, aerospace and naval sectors.
What is different about these innovative supercapacitors:
- Solid-State Electrolyte for improved safety: solid-state electrolyte supercapacitor is safer than the standard one, prevents the risk of degradation, explosions, evaporations and leaks
- Shapeability: their mouldable nature allows for embedding into pre-existing parts of vehicles or devices optimizing space and weight
- High power density: supercapacitors high-power density enables battery downsizing further lightening vehicles and reducing the occupied space
- Wide range of operating temperatures: they can efficiently operate in extreme temperatures (up to 120°C)
- Extremely long life cycles (up to 20 years) and fast-charging
- Weight optimization and space savings: supercapacitor’s high-power density allows for battery downsizing and their mouldable nature allows embedding into different vehicles or device structures - Stage of Development

- Sustainable Development Goals
- Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- IPR status
- IPR applied but not yet granted
Partner Sought
- Expected Role of a Partner
-
Ideal partners are OEMs that can integrate supercapacitors in their vehicles’ shells or parts (automotive, aerospace and naval sectors) through a prototype. The number of cells and the supercapacitor’s shape will be planned with the final client. The company provides the cells which will be integrated into composite materials (Ex. carbon fiber). The company is willing to cooperate with international partners to create prototypes jointly depending on their specific needs. Moreover, the company is open to partnering with battery producers who are in contact with OEMs.
The partnership sought is a commercial agreement with technical assistance, however, the Italian company is also interested in exploring a research cooperation agreement to further explore research and development in the field. - Type and Size of Partner
