General information

Short Summary
A start-up from Greece has created a self-operating craft using technology that is designed to collect and dispose of waste and pollutants from the surface of the water. The client is interested in finding investors to fund further development of its technology.
Full Description
This spin-off, which was created by one of the most important centres in Greece for scientific research, has developed an autonomous surface vessel (ASV) aimed at ridding the sea surface of harmful pollutants and waste.

It was founded in 2020 by a team of five engineers and researchers with expertise in various fields such as smart and composite materials, artificial intelligence (AI), micro-mobility technologies, soft robotics, and scanning / sensor technology.

The device can detect, collect, and remove waste and harmful particles of various sizes and composition through a multi-layered filtering system. It is designed to travel on the surface of the water and is powered by energy from a combination of renewable sources including solar panels, wave energy, and electromechanical tuned mass dampers (TMDs) that absorb and transfer energy from vibrations and oscillations. This enables the craft to be powered by water jet propulsion.

Taking into consideration different customer needs, the client envisages the development of the following three vessel sizes:
- a small vehicle measuring ~1m x 0.6m x 0.22m
- a medium-sized vehicle measuring ~1.6m x 1m x 0.45m
- a larger-sized vehicle measuring ~3m x 2m x 0.9m

The client has tested a small-scale pilot device with very promising results and now wishes to progress to the manufacture and testing of vessels on a larger scale. Therefore, they are interested in concluding agreements with investors willing to finance the further advancement of their technology. A detailed business plan is available on request.
Advantages and Innovations
Advantages and novelties:-
- this technology relates to an autonomous surface vessel (ASV) that is suitable for use in harbours and marinas, as well as in the open sea and on lakes
- it has the capability to detect and clean up various pollutants using artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned vehicle technology (such as that used in drones)
- it can detect and collect a wide range of pollutants through a filtering technology that uses multiple stages or layers, each designed to target specific types of debris or pollutants, and remove them from the water. For example, the first layer is for coarse filtration to capture larger debris, such as floating plastics or large items. The second layer involves a finer filtration layer to capture smaller particles, like microplastics (measuring around 100 micrometres), algae, or other bio-waste. And the third layer is a very fine filtration system to remove even smaller particles, such as oil droplets or chemical contaminants, from the water
- it uses a unified data acquisition system where data is gathered in a co-ordinated, unified manner and fed into a neural network that is constantly updated or trained as new data arrives
- the device is not expensive to produce, (costing no more than 2000, 3000 and 6000 Euros respectively for the corresponding vessel size, after having achieved mass scale production) and has low maintenance costs.
