Two Slovenian research organizations, specialized in catalyst materials and ammonia cracking have developed a novel technology for ammonia cracking and are together with other European core partners planning to coordinate a project proposal under HORIZON-JU-CLEANH2-2025-02-03.
The technology presents a significant advancement in hydrogen gas storage and production technologies by utilizing structured catalysts for efficient, rapid, on-demand, and reversible ammonia synthesis and decomposition. It includes catalyst materials, their preparation procedures, and a reactor system for electrified and responsive system for ammonia cracking. The technology addresses hydrogen’s volatility and storage challenges, facilitating the adoption of renewable energy sources and enhancing the efficiency of hydrogen-based applications. The Slovenian research organizations have a working lab-prototype, which can produce 10-100 g/day of hydrogen.
The scope of the project is to design, manufacture and demonstrate in an operational environment a system prototype for efficient ammonia cracking for at least 100 kg/day production.
