General information
- Short Summary
-
The market for autonomous systems like AUVs, UAVs, and ground robots is growing rapidly. As complexity increases, a reliable and efficient power supply becomes essential to ensure performance, extend operation time and avoid costly downtime.
To address these challenges, the inventors have developed an intelligent power supply with real-time monitoring and selective power saving designed for autonomous systems. - Full Description
-
Mobile robotic systems typically rely on their own power supply, often in the form of lithium-ion batteries. The power management solution presented here was originally developed for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), but is equally suitable for a wide range of other battery-powered systems, including land-based robots, large Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and stationary autonomous systems.
This smart power supply enables efficient, low-loss operation of two lithium-ion batteries in parallel, using ideal diode technology. Each battery, typically made up of six cells, is individually protected against undervoltage, overvoltage, and overcurrent. Voltage and current are continuously monitored, and the remaining battery capacity is estimated in real time.
All measurement data is made available via a UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) interface using a proprietary communication protocol based on the NMEA standard.
The combined system voltage can be distributed to connected devices via five switchable output channels. This allows components such as sensors or actuators to be powered individually, helping to reduce overall energy consumption. Each output channel includes current monitoring, a programmable electronic fuse, and built-in short-circuit protection. For components that require lower voltages, the system provides two integrated DC/DC converters: one with 5V/5A and another with 12V/3A output. Both converters are monitored for voltage and current to ensure reliable operation. - Advantages and Innovations
