General information

Short Summary
A Greek Internet of Things company has developed a wireless climate data measuring device for agricultural applications that can send and store the information via a cloud-based platfrom. The client wishes to offer this technology to crop farmers under commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Full Description
This Greek company was established by electronic and computer engineers specialized in data communication systems. The company’s strength is based on the collaboration it has established with research laboratories hosted in institutes and universities across the country. It contributes to scientific research in various fields, including agrifood, by pitching in with other players in order to produce innovative and original products or services. The company’s core personnel have participated in more than 25 EU-funded projects.

With a view to applying the most up-to-date smart solutions to agriculture, it has developed a micro-climate station for farms. It is a low-cost device that acquires critical crop field data, which are a top-priority for farmers and agronomists regarding crop cycle evaluation and optimization. Its small size and weight, in conjunction with the capability to operate autonomously almost indefinitely with its solar panel along with 2 common AA batteries, makes it a true mount-and-go solution. It is suitable for use in both open fields and greenhouses, and transmits the measurements wirelessly to the cloud using a globally standardized protocol through its dedicated gateway within a radius of 200m. Using multiple stations, this range is extended to any desired direction since each station operates also as a network extender.

This device is market-ready and the company is interested in offering this technology to end-users (i.e. crop farmers or greenhouse growers) via commercial agreements along with all the relevant technical support and assistance for installation and operation.
Advantages and Innovations
The microclimate measuring station has the following innovative features:-
• configurable data acquisition as frequently as every 10 minutes
• ultra small, compact and lightweight device
• transmits data directly to the cloud, therefore no data loggers are required
• solar-powered with common AA batteries as power supply backup, therefore no wires required
• pole-mounted with configurable height and orientation for each component
• operating temperature range from -25°C to +50°C
• configured to produce very accurate data with very low margins of error.

The device is able to record the following:-
• air temperature
• air relative humidity
• soil volumetric water content
• soil electrical conductivity
• soil temperature.
