General information

Short Summary
A Spanish research team has developed an innovative 3D-printed device for precise sediment grain counting and analysis. Targeted at the geoscience community, it offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution. The device stabilizes samples during measurement, preventing errors and ensuring accurate results, making it a unique tool in sediment analysis. The team seeks strategic partners for commercialization.
Full Description
Studies on sediments in both continental and marine environments are crucial for the fields of biology, geology, and sedimentology — the latter focusing on the processes of sediment formation, transport, and deposition. Traditional methods for grain counting and compositional analysis often involve using Petri dishes to hold sediments, followed by photographic documentation using visualization software to avoid overlapping grains. Alternatively, grains can be counted manually with a binocular magnifier and needle. However, these conventional techniques can introduce inaccuracies, such as duplicate counting or misidentification of grains due to overlapping images, thereby compromising the overall reliability of the process.

Researchers at a Spanish university specializing in sedimentology have developed an innovative device designed to address the limitations of traditional grain counting methods. This new technology promises to enhance accuracy, expedite the counting process, and eliminate issues related to duplication.

The research team is seeking companies in the analytical instrumentation sector with global production and sales capabilities to explore a licensing agreement for this new product. A confidentiality agreement will be established prior to the exchange of detailed information.
Advantages and Innovations
The implementation and use of the proposed device offer several compelling potential benefits:

- Enhanced Accuracy and Speed: Achieve more precise and efficient grain counting compared to traditional methods.

- Elimination of Duplication: Avoid the common issue of duplicate counting, ensuring more reliable results.

- Cost-Effective and Sustainable Materials: Use of low-cost and/or recycled materials, contributing to both economic and environmental sustainability.

- Pioneering Innovation: This device represents the first of its kind on the market, setting a new standard in sediment analysis technology.
