General information

Short Summary
A Spanish research team has developed an advanced modular device designed to measure the permeability of biological and industrial membranes to key gases (O₂, CO₂) and water vapor (H₂O g). This versatile and customizable system offers a unique solution for various applications, including plant physiology research, postharvest optimization, and packaging material testing.
Full Description
This permeameter device introduces a flexible and adaptable approach to membrane permeability measurement. Unlike conventional systems designed primarily for large industrial membranes and single-gas analysis, this device features a modular design that allows for customized experimental setups.

Key features include:

- Measurement of O₂, CO₂, and H₂O g in a single cycle.
- Three selectable measurement modes:
- Dynamic gas accumulation analysis
- Carrier gas concentration analysis
- Hybrid mode combining both techniques

TRL 7: Validated in relevant operational environments.

By addressing the limitations of existing solutions, this device fills a critical gap in areas such as postharvest conservation, plant respiration studies, and material permeability testing for the polymer industry.
Advantages and Innovations
- Modular design: Allows flexible adaptation to different membrane sizes and permeabilities.
- Multi-gas measurement: Enables simultaneous assessment of O₂, CO₂, and H₂O g, a feature not commonly available in existing devices.
- Cost-effective and sustainable: Uses commercial sensors and controllers, reducing operational and maintenance costs.
- Broad application range: Suitable for agroindustry, polymer research, and environmental studies.
