General information

Short Summary
A UK startup has patented and developed novel AC-DC-AC conversion architecture achieving best-in-class average efficiencies whilst relying on standard components. It has recently launched its products, covering up to 250W, through a major manufacturing partner. Further partnerships are sought in electronics and solar industries through commercial agreements with technical assistance, to develop new products. The UK company will aid with the architecture and design.
Full Description
Typical PSU (power supply unit) topologies deliver peak efficiency towards full load, dropping away at lighter loads where low power efficiencies often compromise the average efficiency of the unit. The power industry continues to improve average efficiency by engineering solutions that focus on increasing peak efficiency, often incorporating more costly components, even though typical applications spend most of their operating time at lighter loads. As a result many power supplies specify peak loads that only take place over short durations.
New regulation is driving innovation for PSUs. Various power solutions companies (PSU, converting AC-DC (alternative to direct current) or vice versa in consumer devices) want to comply with these regulations, including the European Commission 'Eco Design' Regulation (EC) No 278/2009. In addition the EU Commission has recently adopted new rules to reduce the energy consumption of electrical appliances – this is estimated to impact over 800 mn devices sold annually in the EU.
A UK company now offers an alternative technology for PSUs up to 250W that can enable companies seeking to comply with these rules and that uses 95% commodity components. It has been launched to market, supported by a major PSU manufacture, with a proven ability to deliver a flat efficiency profile across the power load spectrum for a PSU. In published results (available on request) significant power savings have been achieved compared to a typical flyback architecture.
The new architecture and controls are scalable into higher power ranges, with a new product covering PSUs up to 600W been prototyped.
The company now seeks additional commercial agreements with technical assistance, to incorporate the patented technology in different sectors including consumer electronics, home appliances, LED drivers, telecoms, data farms etc. The UK company will aid with new product development.
Advantages and Innovations
The technology achieves a flat efficiency profile for power supplies that is significantly better when measured against standard offerings such as flybacks. These results are achieved using standard components that result in cheaper Bill of Materials (BOM) costs against comparable technologies.
