General information

Short Summary
ThothX Meridian is a Portuguese company providing real-time, radar-based monitoring of geostationary orbit. It delivers precise, all-weather space surveillance. With operations in Canada and upcoming sites in Portugal and Australia, offers scalable, sustainable SSA solutions for defence and commercial users, supported by ESA-BIC, NATO DIANA
ThothX seeks partnerships with investors, and is particularly interested in collaborating with any country seeking to establish SSA within their territory.
Full Description
ThothX Meridian is a Portuguese company focused on delivering high-precision, real-time monitoring of the increasingly congested geostationary Earth orbit (GEO). Headquartered in the Azores, the company specializes in radar-based Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and is actively pursuing international partnerships with defence and space agencies, commercial satellite operators, and European research and innovation consortia.
Radar is the only technology capable of detecting and tracking any object in space, regardless of whether it is actively transmitting, at any time of day, and in all weather conditions. ThothX is currently the only commercial provider offering radar-based monitoring specifically for GEO orbits.
The company’s approach combines innovation with sustainability. Its ground-based radar system repurposes decommissioned telecommunications antennas and equips these with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. This model ensures a cost-effective, environmentally responsible, and scalable solution.
At the core of this system is Earthfence, ThothX’s proprietary software platform that operates the radar infrastructure, collects and processes data, and delivers real-time, automated tracking of spacecraft and objects in deep space. The system is capable of monitoring objects the size of a school bus and distinguishing them when just 60 meters apart. Ongoing technology development aims to enhance detectivity to football-sized objects within the next two to five years.
Earthfence is already fully operational at ThothX’s original site in Ontario, Canada, where it provides GEO surveillance data for clients such as the Canadian Ministry of Defence, MDA Space, and COMSPOC, a leading commercial space operations company. The technology is currently being expanded to Portugal and Australia, leveraging a growing portfolio of four large antennas, which will enable near-global GEO coverage, with redundancy in overlapping zones.
In Portugal, ThothX Meridian will ensure coverage over the Atlantic and European sectors through two antennas located in the Azores and Sintra, expected to be operational soon. The company has already established strategic partnerships with key stakeholders, including the German Aerospace Center (DLR), the Portuguese Air Force, MDA Space, and the U.S. Space Force. ThothX is also supported by innovation initiatives such as ESA-BIC (European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre) and NATO DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic), reinforcing its dual-use credibility across civilian and defence domains.
As a DIANA innovator, ThothX is aligning its capabilities with the emerging Strategic Space Situational Awareness System (3SAS) initiative, aimed at building a NATO-wide SSA network. The company estimates that a global, fully redundant Earthfence® network would require a minimum of eight antennas strategically located worldwide.
Beyond passive monitoring, ThothX is working to evolve its system into a proactive deterrence capability, in alignment with the Space Threats Operational Response (THOR) initiative.
The global SSA market is expected to grow at approximately 5% annually, reaching an estimated €2.2 billion by 2029. Based on conservative market segmentation assumptions across data and service providers and orbital regimes, the radar-for-GEO segment alone is projected to grow from €300 million to €350 million between 2025 and 2029.
To address this growing market, ThothX is prioritizing direct engagement with military, governmental, and large commercial satellite operators, customers that require real-time, continuous, and weather-independent awareness of their space assets. Following this, the company plans to support the emerging on-orbit servicing market, which has a clear need for precise tracking during close-proximity maneuvers. Broader commercial expansion will be driven by a combination of direct sales and strategic partnerships, enabling integrated SSA solutions at scale.
Advantages and Innovations
ThothX Meridian provides a radar-based SSA capability that is already operational, backed by existing infrastructure, validated customers, and public-sector support. Its technology addresses a clear and growing need for precise, persistent monitoring of the GEO environment, serving both national security and commercial interests across the Atlantic and European sectors, within a roadmap for global expansion.
ThothX Meridian offers a cutting-edge space situational awareness (SSA) solution for monitoring the increasingly congested geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), where an estimated $50–100 billion in satellite infrastructure is currently deployed. The company provides advanced surveillance services through EARTHFENCE, a proprietary radar-based monitoring system capable of continuous, real-time observation of GEO objects.
It is designed to operate 24/7, in all weather conditions, with detection and update intervals of less than two minutes. This system enables the identification and tracking of space objects with current capabilities including detection of objects with a radar cross-section of 3 m², and discrimination between objects as close as 60 meters apart. These performance parameters position EARTHFENCE as a precise, persistent monitoring tool for GEO environments. Planned enhancements will further increase resolution, with future goals of achieving detection of 0.3 m² objects and discrimination of objects 10 meters apart.
ThothX Meridian is headquartered in Portugal, with radar assets located in Sintra and the Azores, providing surveillance coverage capability over the Atlantic and European GEO sectors. These services build upon the operational foundation established by Thoth Technology Inc., which monitors GEO over the Americas and the Western Atlantic from a Canadian facility. That existing operation already serves clients including Canadian Department of Defence (DoD), MDA Space and COMSPOC.
