Apiculture Research Center in the Turkish Agricultural Research Institute has been working on especially honey bees since 1965 and bumble bees since 2022. The center has long experience in the breeding and conservation of honey bees by rearing breeds and F1 queens by artificial insemination and natural mating in isolated island conditions), pollination studies at greenhouses, management techniques of colonies, investigation of performance and behavioral characteristics of honey bee colonies, control methods of honey bee pathogens by using genetic and molecular techniques, bee products and bumble bee management. The center has an important role in terms of pollination in the institute that working on the breeding of crops and horticulture on 2053 decares of open fields and 10,000 square meters of closed area (Greenhouses, fast-track breeding systems, and hydroponic) to develop varieties adapted to pollinator-friendly farming.
The institute has a range of products produced and transferred to the farmers and sectors. The research programmes under the departments of biodiversity and genetics (the National Gene Bank of Seed, 58,050 seed samples from 3,339 species, 36,700 IZ-coded herbarium samples from 141 families, and 1,374 mushroom samples), field crop (Barley, Wheat, Potatoes, Medicinal plants, Tobacco, Oilseeds, Forage crops, and Edible grain legume), horticulture (vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, melon, lettuce, bean, cucumber, cauliflower), fruits (pomegranates, quinces, mandarins, troyer, almonds, sour cherries, green plums, European plums, Japanese plums, plum rootstocks), and ornamental plants), plant protection (rust diseases seen in cereal fields), the advanced R&D centers such as cereal rust diseases and apiculture research centers as well as supporting laboratory services (Plant Tissue Culture Center, Biotechnology Laboratory, and Technology (Quality) Laboratory) have been in service in institute since 1963.
The institute has also successfully led various projects about mainly breeding, development, and protection of honey bees and plants such as 71 pieces projects funded by TAGEM (Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies), 3 pieces projects funded by TUBITAK, and 16 pieces projects funded by private sector on the national platform, 2 pieces project funded by CIMMYT & FAO on the international platform.
