General information
- Short Summary
- This project focuses on the sustainable use of plant-based waste, specifically pomegranate seed pomace, to extract bioactive compounds like punicic acid. Pomegranate seed pomace, a by-product of juice production, is typically discarded as waste. However, it contains valuable bioactive components with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and heart health benefits, making it a potential source for high-value products in both the cosmetic and food supplement industries.
- Full Description
- The primary goal of the project is to reduce environmental impact by repurposing this agricultural waste into sustainable, cost-effective ingredients for cosmetics and functional foods. The bioactive compound punicic acid, abundant in pomegranate seed oil, will be explored for its potential applications in skin care products such as anti-aging creams, serums, lotions, and sunscreens. Additionally, the compound’s heart health benefits, including cholesterol regulation, anti-inflammatory effects, blood pressure reduction, and antioxidant properties, will be utilized in functional food supplements.
- Advantages and Innovations
- The project aims to contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing waste and promoting the use of eco-friendly, plant-based ingredients. It also seeks to increase Turkey’s competitiveness in the global market by utilizing domestic plant waste for the production of high-value bioactive compounds, reducing reliance on imported materials, and supporting local manufacturing.
