A woman academic start-up in Turkey is developing a low-cost, environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture concept seed coating formulation/technology. The prepared hydrogel formulations both support plant growth and protect the plant from possible drought effects with its water retention capacity in sustainable agriculture concept. By adding ZnO and NPs into the hydrogel, seeds are provided with micronutrient, fungicidal, bactericidal and insecticidal properties. The formulation prepared for general use of different cereal seeds is prepared by using different colourants to give identity to the seeds.
These formulations may need to be prepared separately for each seed and the formulation studies can be carried out on all cereal seeds. The difference of the developed technology from the seed coatings available in the market is as follows.
-The products available in the market contain water soluble zinc sulphate. However, zinc precipitation with calcium, phosphate and carbonate in the soil or leaching of zinc from the surface in loose soils prevents plants from utilising zinc. For this reason, nanoparticles are added in the developed technology/formulation so that zinc utilization is at a high level.
-The products available in the market include EO/PO block copolymer, acrylic/styrene copolymer, methacrylic copolymer, polyhydroxy stearate derivatives and alkyd PEG derivatives. It is seen that these products are synthetic seed coating materials. Within the scope of the project, an environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture concept seed coating formulation containing natural polymers will be developed.
-Designing and applying the seed coating material specifically to the needs of the seed leads to the most effective results. For this reason, formulations are prepared by the Turkish company upon request in line with the needs of the market and seed companies.
