The Andalusian research team belongs to the University of Malaga and works in Biomimetic Dendrimers and Photonic Laboratory.
Some of the activities carried out by the research group are focused on the the development of new molecular and supramolecular chemical entities, at nano- and micro-scale, and their applications in biological medias of medical interest. The present invention proposes the selective marking of mitochondria with fluorescent compounds with 2-photon absorption capacity, which is why it has applications in the field of bioimaging and study of these The Andalusian research team belongs to the University of Malaga and works in Biomimetic Dendrimers and Photonic Laboratory.
Some of the activities carried out by the research group are focused on the the development of new molecular and supramolecular chemical entities, at nano- and micro-scale, and their applications in biological medias of medical interest. The present invention proposes the selective marking of mitochondria with fluorescent compounds with 2-photon absorption capacity, which is why it has applications in the field of bioimaging and study of these cellular organelles.
Backgroud: Mitochondria are the subcellular organelles responsible for managing the energy supply to the cell. These organelles are surrounded by a polarized double membrane, with a membrane potential value around 180 mV. This membrane potential facilitates the passage of charged molecules allowing the selective accumulation of positively charged species within the mitochondria.
The present invention refers to the development of new fluorescent di-cationic compounds with 2-photon absorption properties which allows the selective labeling of mitochondria. As low-energy excitation wavelengths are used, the study of these organelles can be carried out in living cells.
The main novelty lies in the development of new fluorescent compounds with the capacity to absorb two photons that allow the specific, sensitive and rapid labeling of mitochondria, which represents an important advance in the field of bioimaging.
In short, there is a need in this field to develop new fluorescent compounds with the capacity to absorb two photons that allow specific, sensitive and rapid labeling of mitochondria, representing an important advance in the field of bioimaging.
