General information

Short Summary
The wasp nest treatment device enables DIY users to dispense a measured amount of insecticide in awkward or elevated places like roofs, attics and outbuildings, safely from a distance. It is portable, reusable, lightweight and built to last. Designed and manufactured in the UK, patent protected in the UK and Europe.

The company is looking to expand into Europe, Australia and New Zealand and seeking a commercial (distribution) partnership.
Full Description
The UK SME’s wasp treatment technology bridges the gap between current DIY wasp nest treatments and the application devices used by professional pest controllers.

The Inventor is a professional pest controller in the UK with over 20 years’ experience. He treats in excess of 500 wasp nests each year, mainly for customers who have wasp nest problems every season, and those who have bought DIY powders or foams that have not worked.

The patented technology applies insecticide via a long (1 or 2 meter) lance, which has a flexible application tip to allow the operator to reach up to or into small tight spaces. A sealed pesticide cartridge is loaded into the device and the operator manually pressurises the internal chamber. When the gauge indicates correct pressure, the operator moves the flexible application tip to its target, in the gap of a roof tile for example. The trigger is activated, and insecticide is ejected down the long lance and targeted through the narrow tip into a tight space, accurately and with minimal overspill or residual insecticide. The operator moves away from the area, unscrews the handle and empties the spent cartridge into a bag for safe disposal.

The patented technology solves the challenges associated with typical DIY wasp treatment methods ie, excess spillage of toxic insecticide with risk of run-off into watercourses, operator safety by avoiding inhalation of pesticide, and the cost or time constraints of regularly calling out a professional pest controller.

Following a 5 year product development and commercialisation journey, the resulting wasp nest treatment device offers a unique value proposition and solution for non-professionals to safely treat their own wasp nest.

The product is retailed as a kit with a quantity of insecticide cartridges included. Packs of spare cartridges are also retailed.

Major customers include farming sector, land and property management, trade professionals such as roofers and electricians as well as private homeowners of properties that get wasp nests frequently.

The company is looking to expand into Europe (in particular France, Spain and Northern Europe), as well as Australia and New Zealand. Seeking distribution partnerships with companies that have existing customer and distribution networks with relevant sectors.
Advantages and Innovations
• A one-handed, pressured trigger delivers a measured dose of insecticide into a wasp nest at speed.
• In one shot, the insecticide is expelled into the nest before the wasps realise that their nest is under attack, reducing risk of wasp retaliation.
• Extendable carbon fibre poles put a safe, 2-3 metre distance between the user and nest, whilst the flexible end tube allows users to target the entrance of a nest from any angle.
• Minimises overspill and targets powder inside of cavities, reduce risk of run-off into watercourses.
• Pre-filled cartridges of insecticide also ensure that the user does not come into contact with toxic insecticidal dust during assembly and treatment.
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
Currently the product complies with Health and Safety Executive (ie: HSE number 7334) pesticide regulation in the UK. We ideally seek distribution partners with knowledge of local regulation, although this is not necessary for partnership agreement. The insecticide is compliant and permitted for EU sale buy its manufacturer.
