An international consortium composed of 10 partners from 7 countries is seeking partners as end-users to complete its consortium to submit a proposal to the call HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-02-02: Post-Li-ion technologies and relevant manufacturing techniques for mobility applications (Generation 5) (Batt4EU Partnership).
The consortium is well balanced in terms of partners from both academia and industry from different parts of Europe.
This consortium has diverse expertise within the lithium sulfur battery technology dealing not only with different cell components but also scalability and large scale manufacturing. The consortium offers unique solutions, methods and advanced characterization tools to address and validate the conventional issues of lithium sulfur batteries to reach the target energy density of 500 Wh kg-1 by fabrication binder and slurry free monolithic cathode together with quasi-solid-state electrolyte and engineered interfaces to support high C-rate capabilities of the resulting batteries and to alleviate well known polysulfide shuttle issue to increase the cycle life well beyond the criteria of the call.
The project aims to meet the criteria of the Horizon call by utilizing monolithic sulfur cathode with areal capacity beyond 10 mAh cm-2 coupled together with lithium metal host anode with demonstrated dendrite free lithium plating current density of 71 mA cm-2. In addition, the consortium utilizes an innovative and scalable method to implement sub-micrometer scale artificial interface directly onto the electrodes to enhance the cell cycle life and high C-rate capability. To address the safety aspect, the consortium aim to implement the quasi-solid-state electrolyte with the thickness less than 8 µm. In addition, the consortium has expertise to scale up the process from the coin cell level to the pouch cell with capacities beyond 2 Ah and also maintaining manufacturing cost eventually well below 75 $ k Wh. - Advantages and Innovations
- The solution provided by the consortium meets the criteria to fabricate 500 wh kg-1 lithium-sulfur cells along with the long cycle life and high C-rate capabilites, specifically meeting and going beyond the criteria of the Horizon call. The project implements as well utilizes unique and scalable methodologies from the beginning of the project, which go well beyond the lab scale (TRL4), hence making the transition from lab scale to semi-industrial scale possible and easy. This takes into account the synergies between the different components of the lithium sulfur cell.
- Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
- The consortium is looking for a partner which deals or has expertise with the implementation of lithium-ion cells within the micro-electromobility or EVTOL application. The partner would play the role of end user for the product development by the consortium during the project.
