General information
- Short Summary
- Smart-Release Fertilizers – eco-friendly fertilizers that revolutionize efficiency and sustainability, producing higher yields at lower dosages. Smart-Release fertilizers have unique root-activated release; nutrient stays insoluble, locked in a crystal matrix and is only released when plant root exudates trigger it—minimizing losses and eutrophication. Smart-Release Phosphate is compatible with urea and micronutrients. All components are plant nutrients—no microplastics.

Agtec Innovations is a company based in California, USA and is involved in research in designing and developing novel molecules for use as eco-friendly fertilizers. Our technologies are based on a unique approach of producing water-insoluble materials with nutrient release that will be triggered on-demand by the crop.
(A) Smart-Release Phosphate (SmartP) is a next-generation, eco-friendly phosphate fertilizer engineered for high efficiency and environmental protection. Unlike conventional phosphates, SmartP offers a root-activated release mechanism, ensuring phosphate is delivered precisely when and where crops need it—maximizing uptake while minimizing waste.
Traditional phosphate fertilizers, while essential to global food production, come with major drawbacks: runoff pollution, algal blooms, fish die-offs, and low efficiency due to soil fixation. Moreover, phosphate is a finite natural resource, making it critical to use it wisely.
While many water-insoluble alternatives exist, they often fail to provide nutrients in plant-available forms. Products like rock phosphate rely on slow, pH-dependent dissolution processes that rarely align with crop demands—leading to phosphate deficiency and poor yield. SmartP changes this paradigm.
Its phosphate is held in a crystalline matrix, stable in the soil and protected from runoff and leaching. Only organic acids and chelators exuded by roots dissolve it—making SmartP effective across diverse soils and climates. Every ingredient—calcium, polyphosphate, orthophosphate—is a plant nutrient. No synthetic coatings. No plastic residues.
Benefits at a glance:
• Significantly higher crop yields with reduced phosphate input
• Minimizes environmental impact and conserves natural resources
• Prevents runoff and eutrophication of water bodies
• Reduces losses due to soil fixation and leaching
• Fully compatible with urea, micronutrients, and N-P-Ca formulations
Smart-Release P is not just sustainable—it’s smarter.
(B) Smart Coatings for Phosphates – A Scalable, Eco-Friendly Upgrade for DAP/MAP
This novel smart coating is a fully inorganic, plastic-free solution engineered to enhance the performance of phosphate fertilizers such as DAP and MAP. Made entirely from plant-available nutrients, it reduces phosphate leaching, runoff, and fixation in soil — leading to significantly improved phosphorus use efficiency.
The coating material is a water-insoluble powder that can be applied to granular DAP/MAP using a simple, dry process requiring no solvents or specialized equipment. This makes it highly compatible with existing fertilizer production lines, enabling easy integration at scale.
By adopting this technology, manufacturers can differentiate their phosphate products with a sustainability-forward solution that aligns with tightening environmental regulations and growing demand for cleaner agricultural inputs.
(C) Smart-Release Micronutrients – Root-Responsive Fertilizer Technology for Enhanced Efficiency
Smart-Release Micronutrients—including Smart Zinc, Boron, Manganese, Iron, Copper, and Molybdenum—represent a new class of eco-friendly fertilizers that leverage root-triggered nutrient delivery for unmatched efficiency and sustainability.
Each micronutrient is encapsulated within a crystalline matrix designed to remain inert until activated by organic acids secreted by plant roots. This targeted, root-acid-activated mechanism ensures nutrients are released only when and where the plant needs them, minimizing waste and maximizing uptake. In the absence of root activity, the formulation remains stable and largely immobile in the soil.
Our smart fertilizers were among the first to pioneer this root-responsive approach to nutrient delivery. Acting as a controlled-release reservoir, the formulation provides a consistent supply of micronutrients throughout the crop cycle. Being water-insoluble, it resists leaching and fixation, while remaining readily bioavailable in the rhizosphere. - Advantages and Innovations
-
1. Precision Nutrient Delivery
Smart-Release Fertilizers utilize a novel root-activated release mechanism combined with reduced water solubility. This ensures that nutrients are delivered in sync with crop demand—minimizing leaching, runoff, and fixation by soil constituents. The result is consistently higher nutrient use efficiency.
2. Yield Boost with Lower Input Costs
By making nutrients available when and where the plant needs them, Smart-Release formulations deliver superior crop performance at lower application rates. This translates to higher yields, reduced fertilizer requirements, and enhanced return on investment (ROI) for farmers.
3. Environmentally Responsible Formulations
Our phosphate solutions are water-insoluble yet fully plant-available, significantly reducing phosphorus loss to the environment. This helps mitigate eutrophication and algal blooms in water bodies, aligning with global environmental compliance trends.
4. Versatile and Customizable
• Smart-Release Phosphates can be co-formulated with urea, enabling novel combinations of calcium, phosphate, and nitrogen in a single product.
• Micronutrients (Zn, B, Mn, Fe, Cu, Mo) can be integrated seamlessly, allowing for multi-nutrient products tailored to regional soil and crop needs.
5. Clean, Nutrient-Only Coatings
Our Smart Coatings for DAP/MAP granules are 100% nutrient-based and plastic-free, ensuring no contamination. These coatings reduce phosphate loss and improve crop response—offering a performance boost without compromising soil or environmental health.
6. Compatibility and Ease of Adoption
Smart-Release Micronutrients are fully compatible with phosphate fertilizers and can be coated onto granules without affecting bioavailability. The application process is dry, solvent-free, and adaptable to existing manufacturing setups. - Stage of Development
